Blonde Bloody Mary + Five Faves Lately

The newest take on the Bloody Mary in Charleston has been the Blonde Bloody Mary.  I’ve been to two spots recently, and both had these, instead of your usual Bloody Mary.  I don’t know about you, but I’m always in the mood for a Bloody Mary at brunch.  So what makes them blonde?  You use golden and heirloom tomatoes instead of red ones.

At both The Obstinate Daughter and Ellis Creek Fish Camp, they use local tomatoes which I love.  And how they taste?  They’re fresher and lighter and aren’t as heavy as the regular cocktail.  Try out this recipe below, if you want to attempt to make one yourself.

Blonde Bloody Mary

(found the recipe here; yields 6-8 drinks)

12 medium golden tomatoes
3 tablespoons white Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons green Tabasco sauce
4 teaspoons fine sea salt
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 serrano or jalapeno chile, seeded
1 1/2 tablespoons freshly chopped dill (optional)
12 ounces vodka, or to taste
Lemon cucumber, sliced
6-8 pickled wax beans (see Note)

For the base: Blanch tomatoes in boiling water and then remove the skins. Puree the tomatoes in a blender. (This should yield about 7-8 cups. If not, add more blanched, skinless tomatoes.) Add Worcestershire, Tabasco, salt, lime and lemon juices, chile and dill (if using), and puree until smooth. Strain the mixture into a bowl and set aside.
For the drink: Mix about 8-10 ounces of the tomato puree base with 1 1/2 ounces of vodka. Serve straight up in a tall glass garnished with a pickled yellow wax bean and a slice of lemon cucumber on the side.

Note: Pickled yellow wax beans are available at gourmet markets.

Cheers!

So yesterday evening, we headed out to a little spot to explore and enjoy dinner on the beach.  Turns out what we thought was low tide wasn’t officially low tide on this island, so we ended up getting stuck.  We had to wait out the rest of low tide and for high tide to come in before we could get home.  Never a dull moment.  Definitely a story they’ll always remember, but I think we learned our lesson!

This grey cocoon knit cardigan just came out and I’m in love.  The perfect piece to layer over just about anything this season.

I mentioned these running shoes on Tuesday’s beauty post, but I really do love them.  Each year, Nike perfect their Nike Frees even more, and this pair is super lightweight.  I’ve loved running in them these past few days.  For fit, they’re true to size.

I know this isn’t the most glamour top, but it’s a great weight and perfect for layering.  I ordered one last week, and plan on wearing it with vests and under cardigans.  If you want a snug fit, order true to size.  If you want it to fit looser, order a size up.  There are over ten colors available!

Talk about a throw on and go top, this is it.  It reminds me a lot of the swing sweaters J.Crew came out with a few years ago, except these are longer than those.  And at $39, that’s a great price point.

Sizing Question

screen-shot-2016-10-20-at-6-21-36-am

After the pop-up Lulu post, some of y’all asked about Lululemon’s sizing.  I find that their pieces run small.  For instance, I wear an 8 in these shorts that I love for running.

Happy Thursday!
